Using face powder is incredibly helpful in making you look cleaner and more presentable. It is especially useful to those with oily or blemished skin. But when you have acne, the powder you use to cover up your skin imperfections can actually be the cause of blemishes in the first place. Thankfully, not all face powders are detrimental to acne-prone skin. All it takes is finding the right product to cover up your imperfections without putting you at risk of flare-ups. To find one that’s right for you, it helps to be familiar with the different types of powders, how to choose one based on your specific skin type, and the products that are most popular among other individuals with acne.

Types of Face Powders

1) Pressed Powder

Pressed powder is possibly the most commonly used cosmetic powder. It comes in a compact form and with its own powder puff for application. The trouble with using pressed powder for acne-prone skin is that you could end up with a cakey or patchy-looking face. To address that, you might want to try applying it with a beauty sponge or a makeup brush. Another concern is that it is usually formulated with additional ingredients to keep it compact. Those ingredients might be irritating to your already sensitive skin. Nevertheless, even with these issues, pressed powder is still the most convenient option for good yet light coverage.

2) Loose Powder

Loose powder offers even lighter coverage compared to compact face powders. Generally, they are used to minimize oil for cleaner-looking skin rather than cover up blemishes. These products are composed of tiny particles to make a fine and lightweight powder. Although you won’t risk getting a cakey look with this type of face powder, you also don’t get to cover up imperfections on your face. Plus, while they often come in small containers with small brush applicators already attached, they’re still not a very convenient option for quick touch-ups outside the home.

3) Setting Powder

Setting powder is not used for coverage or even for absorbing oils. Its primary purpose is to set your makeup and keep it from fading throughout the day. This is especially useful if you’re using a liquid or cream-based foundation. Setting powder also comes in loose form and is meant to be applied with a makeup brush. Unlike loose powders, these often come in a translucent color, although some prefer setting with a powder that’s an exact match to their skin tone.

4) Finishing Powder

Many people seem to think that finishing powder is the same as setting powder. While they’re very similar, they actually serve different purposes. While setting powder is meant to help your makeup last longer, finishing powder improves your coverage. It is a very fine powder that blurs our pores and further covers up imperfections. This is especially useful if you expect to be photographed. Finishing powder also comes in loose form and is applied with a makeup brush. Often, they are stark white, but they’re so fine that you won’t notice the color when applied.

How to Choose an Acne-Safe Face Powder

Choosing a face powder isn’t an easy feat for anyone because you need to find the exact match in terms of color, texture, and skin compatibility. If you suffer from acne, the challenge is even more significant because your skin tends to be more sensitive than the average person’s. That means even a small portion of an incompatible ingredient can cause flare-ups that could leave long-lasting blemishes. Additionally, a powder that works well for one person may be unsuited for another, so you need to find one that exactly matches your needs and skin condition. In general, here are some things to keep in mind to guide you in your search:

  • Choose non-comedogenic brands. Find something that won’t block your pores and cause breakouts.
  • Match your skin tone. Choosing a lighter color won’t help you cover up your blemishes but actually accentuate them.
  • Opt for a matte finish. Shimmer and glitter tend to irritate acne-prone skin and also accentuate flaws. Matte powders, on the other hand, are useful for absorbing excess oil.
  • Avoid unnecessary ingredients. Powders that contain menthol or other ingredients that are meant to be soothing could actually cause more harm.
  • Consider medicated powders. Some face powders are actually infused with acne treatments like salicylic acid. Ask your dermatologist if that’s a good option for you.
  • Try mineral products. Mineral products are those that tend to be non-clogging and free of harsh chemicals and synthetic ingredients.

Top Face Powders for Acne-Prone Skin

According to other people with acne-prone skin, here are the best products for each type of face powder. While you’ll still need to try these to see if they’re compatible with your particular skin condition, your chances are pretty good with these options since they’ve been tried and tested by other people like you.

This Neutrogena SkinClearing Mineral Powder is infused with 0.5% Salicylic Acid, which helps clear up active acne and prevent new breakouts. Plus, as with most of Neutrogena’s acne-treating products, it boasts MicroClear Technology, which helps the medication cut through the skin’s sebum and treat acne deep within the skin. It does all this while providing excellent coverage in a variety of shades and a consistent matte finish. Also, it’s a mineral powder that’s gentle, non-clogging, and non-irritating. Additionally, it comes in a compact packaging with a convenient mirror and two-sided applicator for two types of coverage — full or sheer.

Best Setting Powder for Acne – Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder

Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder 2.3 oz. Translucent Tone Loose Face Powder, for Setting Makeup

The Coty Airspun Loose Face Powder is a cult favorite among makeup fanatics. That’s because it delivers incredible setting power at an unbelievably low price. Although this product comes in at least six different shades, the translucent variant is the one that’s most commonly used as a setting powder. It is especially popular for “baking” — a technique used to set makeup, especially when contouring and highlighting. What makes this loose powder perfect for setting is its proprietary Microspun formula, which doesn’t only offer finer powder but softer, too. So, it doesn’t only help set makeup but also provides a velvety-smooth and oil-free look.

Best Finishing Powder for Acne – bareMinerals Mineral Veil

Bare Escentuals Mineral Veil Finishing Powder, 9g-Full Size

The bareMinerals Mineral Veil is the perfect topper for full makeup when you have acne-prone skin because of its mineral, non-clogging formula. Rather than the typical stark white finishing powder, this one has a neutral tone that is perfectly sheer when applied. It is incredibly lightweight and offers a luminous yet natural-looking glow. As expected from a good finishing powder, it blurs imperfections and also minimizes the appearance of fine lines. Additionally, it helps mattify excess oils for a shine-free look. What’s more, bareMinerals also offers the same finishing powder with SPF 25.

Even the best skincare routine can’t save your skin if you’re using cosmetics that cause your acne to flare up. It’s especially important to select the right facial powder because they have a tendency to clog up pores and cause breakouts. So, rather than helping you cover up blemishes, they often just lead to more. But, as soon as you find the right face powder for your acne-prone skin, you’ll enjoy a flawless makeup base, clearer-looking skin, and a product you can rely on for life.
