When you have sensitive skin, shaving can be an ordeal. Even after you’ve carefully selected a shaving cream that’s compatible with your skin, chances are you still suffer from frequent skin irritation. That could be anything from redness and razor burns to ingrown hair and acne breakouts. But, when you suffer from skin sensitivity, your shaving cream isn’t the only thing you should be particular with. The razor you choose equally affects your skin’s reaction.

To find the right razor for you, you first need to be familiar with the different types and the benefits of each one. Then, consider the top-rated tools that other people with sensitive skin swear by. After that, you should be able to make informed decisions about minimizing skin irritation when shaving.

Types of Razors for Sensitive Skin

Generally, there are 5 different types of razors for shaving, and each of them has specific benefits for people with sensitive skin.

1) Straight Razor

A straight razor is an open blade that typically folds into a curved handle. It is most commonly used in barbershops that offer traditional shaves. That’s because, when used properly, the blade itself directly glides over the skin. That gives you the closest shave out of all the available types of razors. Because these are extremely sharp, they’re suitable for people with sensitive skin since it barely requires pressure. However, its open blade, as well as its sharpness, also makes it the most unsafe type because it makes you vulnerable to serious injury.

2) Disposable Razor

Disposable razors are incredibly popular because not only are they easy to find, but they’re also inexpensive. Typically, this type of razor comes in packs and cost less than 50 cents each. While that might seem like incredibly good value for money, each one is really meant to be used for a maximum of 5 shaves. More than that, you risk breakouts and ingrown hair, especially if you have sensitive skin.

3) Cartridge Razor

Cartridge razors are technically also disposable. The main difference is that you only dispose of and replace the detachable blade assembly called the razor cartridge. That allows you to generate less trash since you get to keep the handle for a very long time. Additionally, these usually come with multiple blades (anywhere from 2 to 6 blades, depending on the manufacturer and variant), which means you can get a closer shave with fewer strokes. For people with sensitive skin, that generally means less irritation.

4) Safety Razor

Safety razors are designed for long-term use. It makes use of relatively inexpensive razor blades. Plus, it generates very little waste. The best thing about it is that you get the benefits of an open blade for a very close shave without the safety concerns of a straight razor. It’s also usually pretty heavy, so you don’t need to exert much pressure when you’re shaving. All that is perfect when you have sensitive skin. However, keep in mind that, if you’re used to cartridge razors with swiveling heads, the rigid assembly of a safety razor might take some getting used to.

5) Electric Razor

Electric razors are either corded or battery-operated. It comes in two different types: (1) the rotary shaver and (2) the foil shaver. Rotary shavers feature 3 round blades, and each one moves in a circular motion to remove hair. This is preferred by those who have curly or coarse hair. On the other hand, foil shavers feature straight cutters assembled below a foil that helps achieve a close and clean shave. Shaving with an electric razor doesn’t require any shaving cream, and the non-corded version offer portability and incredible convenience. However, for people with sensitive skin, the friction could cause irritation.

Given all these types, try to determine which you prefer and then check out some of the best shavers that other people with sensitive skin recommend.

Unsurprisingly, a Gillette product is also considered the best among commercially-available cartridge razors. While the company has released several cartridge variants with higher razor counts, the Mach 3 remains to be its most popular shaver, perhaps due to a better balance between price and value. The Gillette Mach 3 Sensitive is especially favored because it has an enhanced Lubrastrip, which allows for a smoother, gentler shave.

If you’re not familiar with them, you might think that safety razors are all the same. However, there’s a reason why the original Chieftain by Vikings Blade has amassed a cult following. It boasts a high-end construction with considerable weight, which means less pressure is required to get a clean shave. Consequently, it is less irritating to the skin. Additionally, it comes with a hard case as well as a pack of premium Swedish Blades.

Tips for Shaving Sensitive Skin

  • Don’t skip your pre-shave ritual. Take a hot shower or, at the very least, cover your face with a hot towel before shaving. That will soften your skin, open up your pores, and allow facial hair to protrude fully. Then, wash your face and use a mild exfoliant to get the cleanest shaving surface possible.
  • Shave along the grain. Shaving against the grain might immediately result in a smoother shave, but it will make you more susceptible to irritation, bumps, and ingrown hairs. Always shave along the same direction of hair growth.
  • Select your shaving cream carefully. While there are shaving foams that are specially formulated for sensitive skin, shaving gels tend to be gentler because they provide ample protection from friction caused by the blades.
  • Use an appropriate aftershave. Avoid aftershaves with harsh ingredients like alcohol and synthetic fragrances. Instead, look for natural products that soothe the skin and have antibacterial and anti-inflammatory properties to minimize irritation and breakouts.
  • Exfoliate often. Dead skin cells could clog your pores and hair follicles. Get rid of them and minimize skin irritation by frequently using a gentle exfoliant.

Shaving can be challenging when you fear getting irritated skin or worse after every shave. But, you might find that the right type of shaver coupled with a good skincare routine will help minimize all the trouble you fear when it comes to shaving. Apart from picking out the right shaving cream and aftershave, make sure you choose the best shaver for your skin and facial hair. Then, take the time to learn how to use it properly. Only then will you be able to enjoy skin that’s free of both hair and blemishes.
